Hockney’s Blues

Art x Outfits Edit #40

David Hockney’s A Bigger Interior with Blue Terrace and Garden, 2017, feels like a mood board for dressing like your imagination got loose in the South of France, or, for that matter, California.

It is a long, narrow canvas, almost awkward in shape like it is refusing to fit neatly on a wall. But that is the point. Hockney is not ever decorating, he is distorting. The painting stretches space like a roll of film: indoors blends with outdoors, chairs float, tables turn into terraces, and nothing behaves. It is a nudge (a stylish one) to bend reality and think outside the frame.

So naturally, I took it personally, and dressed accordingly. A cerulean cardigan as a wink to Yves Klein, leaf-print shorts that could have been plucked from the garden, black jellyfish shoes for a childish twist, yellow sunglasses for a hit of sunshine, and a pink mini bag that serves pure, unnecessary joy.

Dressing is also composition. It is layering flat planes of color like brushstrokes. It is building an outfit that does not necessarily try to match but speaks to the soul, the feeling of the moment. And it just works without trying.

Hockney’s extravagance is loud and loose. Fluid. Playful. And that is the vibe. No need to stay inside the lines, or inside the house for that matter.
