Art x Outfit Edit #38
Last week, I went to the Ellsworth Kelly show at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The retrospective underlines the gradual evolution of his work from figurative inspirations to abstract large scale canvases.
Ellsworth Kelly was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with hard-edge painting, Color field painting and minimalism. His works demonstrate unassuming techniques emphasizing line, color and form. Kelly often employed bright colors radiating beyond the space of the canvas.
His work created a tension between painting and sculpture to as the free form of his color field paintings are sculptural. He emphasized the importance of shadows and the fact that the wall was as much a part of an artwork as the painting itself. The absence of figuration on the canvas itself invites the viewer to consider the painting as a sculpture in dialogue with its environment.
The bold color field Purple Panel from 1986 inspired a saturated purple look while the geometrical canvases called for bold architectural lines. Kelly also participated in numerous architectural projects where his pieces complement the space.
As a perfect transition to Summer, this looks is the epitome of versatility, it can be dressed up or down to fit any need and converse with its environment!
