Nouvelle Vague

Art x Outfit Edit #34

On Saturday, before joining some friends for an afternoon stroll, I decided to visit the Jacquemus store avenue Montaigne to see and feel “Le Camino” bag. As I walked around the store, spotting a particularly fancy Pierre-Auguste Renoir sculpture, I stumbled upon an even more intriguing pair of jeans. Puffy, oversized but fitted at the waist, I had to try it on.

As the sales assistant prepared the changing room, she pulled out pieces and full outfits to try on. We got along, and the team asked me for pictures to send to their VIP clients… I ended up trying half the collection and dreaming about buying all the pieces!! Unfortunately, I did not leave with any of it – I could not choose – and forgot to ask for the pictures. If someone reading this can retrieve them, I will be eternally grateful.

Jacquemus’ collection is called “Les Sculptures”, and he was inspired by the bold shapes of realist and modern sculptures, of which Camille Claudel’s “La Vague” is an example. The bronze and marble piece is inspired by Rodin, who masterfully transcribed the details of the human body. The wave looks like a marble version of Hokusai’s, an important piece of inspiration for the Impressionists of the period.

From painting to sculpture to clothes, different inspirations transform and morph to create new pieces resonating with new publics. Jacquemus pieces translate sculptures into wearable art, where forms and line are not only a question of fit but of drawings that move into space.
